The UK context
Above 51.5°N latitude — which includes most of the UK — UVB synthesis is essentially zero between October and April. The angle of the sun is too low for the wavelengths needed to trigger vitamin D production in skin, regardless of how much time you spend outdoors. Practical Guidance: Testing, Supplementing, and Timing
Getting tested
The NHS will test 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D) on request. It's important to ask specifically for 25-OH-D — this is the storage form and the standard clinical measure. "Vitamin D" without specification may just return a note about dietary recommendations. Deficiency is defined as below 50 nmol/L; insufficiency is 50–75 nmol/L. For PCOS/PMOS, the evidence base increasingly suggests that optimal is likely 100–150 nmol/L — higher than the general population threshold.

The timeline

The magnesium connection
Vitamin D and magnesium are metabolic cofactors — vitamin D requires magnesium for activation, and supplementing D3 can worsen latent magnesium deficiency by drawing on magnesium stores.
