PCOS/PMOS Pattern Starter Guide

Your body has patterns. Here's how to start reading them.

Most PCOS/PMOS resources tell you what works on average. Eat less sugar. Exercise more. Sleep better. And while none of that is wrong, it doesn't explain why some weeks feel manageable and others feel like your body is working against you — even when you've been doing everything “right.”

That's because PCOS/PMOS isn't an average condition. It sits on a spectrum, it interacts with your stress load, your cycle, your sleep, and your food choices in ways that are specific to your body. What works for someone else may make you worse. What looks like failure on a calorie app might actually be your body telling you something useful.

Atlas doesn't make you log everything. It asks you five things a day and looks for patterns in your answers over time. This guide explains what those five things are, why they matter, and what you can expect in your first 14 days.

The 5 Signals Worth Tracking

Energy (morning + afternoon)

Rate your energy twice a day: once when you wake up, once in the afternoon. The gap between those two scores is more informative than either number alone.

Morning energy reflects your cortisol awakening response — a spike that should happen naturally within 30–45 minutes of waking. In women with PCOS/PMOS, blunted or dysregulated cortisol patterns are common, often presenting as “I can't wake up” mornings or an excessive need for caffeine before functioning. Afternoon energy dips, meanwhile, are a proxy for insulin sensitivity — a sharp crash around 2–4pm after eating is one of the clearest early signals of a glucose dysregulation pattern.

What to watch for: consistently low morning scores on days following poor sleep or high-stress evenings.

Cravings (type + intensity)

Log what you're craving (sweet, salty, or nothing in particular) and how intense it feels on a 1–5 scale. This isn't about willpower — it's a hormonal read.

Sweet cravings are often insulin-driven (your cells want glucose they're struggling to absorb). Salty cravings frequently track with cortisol depletion (the adrenal glands burn through electrolytes under sustained stress). Neither type tells you much in isolation — but the pattern over 2–4 weeks is genuinely diagnostic.

The most important thing about cravings: they respond to food with a 24–72 hour lag. What you ate yesterday or the day before is often driving today's cravings, not what you ate this morning. This is the mechanic that calorie apps completely miss.

What to watch for: sweet craving spikes 2–3 days after high-carb days, or salty craving clusters in the luteal phase.

Mood (composite)

Rate your overall mood on a simple 1–5 scale. Don't overthink it.

The value here is in daily volatility, not the average score. A mood that swings 3 points in two days is more informative than a stable 3. Mood volatility is a rough proxy for HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis tone — the central stress-response system — and in PCOS/PMOS, HPA dysregulation is a key underlying driver that rarely gets addressed directly.

What to watch for: mood drops on days 2–5 after elevated stress, and mood floors in the luteal phase (days 18–28 for regular cycles).

Cycle day

Log your current cycle day or phase (follicular / ovulatory / luteal / menstrual). If your cycles are irregular, use approximate phase if you know it, or leave it as-is — partial data is still useful.

Cycle phase transforms what every other signal means. Low energy in the luteal phase is normal (progesterone is naturally sedating). Low energy in the follicular phase, when estrogen should be climbing, is a signal worth investigating. Cravings in the late luteal phase aren't weakness — they're a predictable consequence of progesterone-driven insulin resistance. Knowing your phase turns confusion into context.

What to watch for: which phase your worst days cluster in, and whether the pattern repeats.

Food response

After meals, log the broad shape of what you ate: protein-heavy, carb-heavy, balanced, or low-carb. You're not counting macros — you're labelling the character of the meal.

The signal here is how you feel in the 2–4 hours after eating, and over the following day. Because of the insulin response lag, a carb-heavy meal at dinner may not show up in your cravings or energy until the following afternoon. Protein-heavy meals tend to flatten the insulin response curve — which is why “eat more protein” shows up in PCOS/PMOS advice so often, but the mechanism (dampened craving cycle downstream) rarely gets explained.

What to watch for: energy or craving changes 12–48 hours after different meal types.

Your First 14 Days

Days 1–3
Noise

Your first few entries are baselines, not patterns. Don't try to interpret them yet. The goal is just consistency — logging takes 90 seconds once you're in the habit.

Days 4–7
Soft signals

You may notice some loose correlations starting to form. These aren't reliable yet — a single data point doesn't make a pattern — but they give you something to watch. Common early observations: “I feel worse the morning after late nights” (obvious, but now you have data confirming it) and “My afternoon energy is consistently lower on days after high-carb dinners.”

Days 8–14
First real patterns

This is where Atlas starts to find the non-obvious correlations — the ones you wouldn't have noticed yourself because they're separated by days, not hours. A typical first pattern might look like: “On days you log carb-heavy + low protein, your cravings score 3 days later averages 1.4 points higher.” That's a specific, actionable insight. It means something for how you plan your meals.

Most users find their first meaningful pattern within 14 days. Some find it earlier. The pattern engine needs at least 7–10 days of consistent data before it has enough to work with.

Which foods are driving your worst symptom days?

Not in a generic “sugar is bad” way — in a specific “here's what the 3 days before your worst cravings days look like” way. This is the information that lets you make adjustments that actually stick.

Which cycle phases are hardest, and what softens them?

You'll see your own luteal phase pattern clearly. More importantly, you'll start to see what behaviours make the luteal phase worse (high stress, disrupted sleep, specific food patterns) and what seems to cushion it.

What does a good week look like for your body specifically?

This is the one that changes everything. Most PCOS/PMOS advice is about avoiding bad things. Pattern tracking gives you a positive picture — this sleep pattern, this food approach, this stress load is when you function well. That's a much more sustainable frame to work from.

A Note on the Science

Atlas is a pattern-tracking tool, not a diagnostic tool. The correlations it surfaces are observations in your own data — they're not medical diagnoses and they shouldn't replace advice from your GP or specialist.

That said, the mechanisms behind PCOS/PMOS are real and well-documented. Insulin resistance affects 50–70% of women with PCOS regardless of weight. HPA axis dysregulation — chronic stress response — is increasingly recognised as a central driver rather than a secondary effect. Cycle phase impacts on mood, cravings, and energy are hormonal, not psychological.

If you want to take your data further, the tests most worth asking your GP for are: HOMA-IR (insulin resistance index), fasting insulin (more sensitive than fasting glucose alone), DHEA-S (adrenal androgen load), and free testosterone + SHBG (androgen bioavailability). These four, alongside your Atlas patterns, give a much clearer picture than standard bloods alone.
